The stats depiction in the pic overhead have already affirmed that Gitlab is just taking over Github! 😃 Even though both are basically remote git repository managers and have basically the same functions, the range of complementary features Gitlab have and their pricing vary greatly!

My stand on Github

| Github |

Github provides hosting for software development version control using Git — is a command line tool used for version control, i.e it is used to track changes in the source code over the timeline of the project and simultaneously allowing multiple developers to coordinate and work together.

It provides an easy to use interface to collaborate, commit changes, manage pull requests and issues. It also includes other features such as wikis, Github marketplace and some other basic management tools for the repositories.

Well, what’s up Gitlab?

| Gitlab |

Gitlab on the other hand is a web-based DevOps life-cycle tool that provides a Git-repository manager providing wiki, issue-tracking and continuous integration(CI)/continuous deployment(CD) pipeline features. Gitlab is more like an online DevOps manager just as Github is like an online git repositories management tool. It came into existence in 2011 and influenced many such open-source organisation to shake hands with it.

Wide-Acceptance around the Globe!

As I told earlier, Gitlab has been accepted world-wide by many renowned organisations. Many huge tech-giants, independent space agencies such as NASA, Gaming and entertainment corporation such as SONY etc.

This gives a clear shot that at what extent it has gained the popularity among the open-source community and it’s wide acceptance over the world gives us the proof of the fact.

Intimate personal views!

According to me, when I first enter to the room of my organisation’s repository, I found Gitlab at it’s huge! I found too many features/options in it even after years working with Github. It wasn’t too much peculiar, but someone once belonged to Github can easily be friendly with Gitlab as it’s having a very catchy environment (User-friendly).

Actually, my open-source organisation — The ns-3 -Network Simulator Project was collaborating and managing their code on Github but later it moved with Gitlab! So, it was quite a very fantabulous journey with Gitlab yet and will be further too.

I would also like to say, Github has the powerful open-source community of all times and it’s still throwing major challenges for Gitlab which needs to be overcome by time. By the way, All the very best to both — Go forth, & conquer.

Thankyou!
